Pete and Carol Schwartzkopf were honored with the 2024 Sussex Distinguished Citizen Award by the Sussex District of the Del-Mar-Va Council Scouting America at a Sept. 18 dinner.
The event, which took place at The Starboard in Dewey Beach, recognized the former Delaware speaker of the house and his wife for their service to the Delaware State Police, General Assembly and Cape Henlopen School District. Previous recipients of the award include Wm. Jack Riddle; Pat Campbell-White; Alex Pires; Mike Vincent; Joseph, Chris and Preston Schell; Dale Dukes; and Drs. Greg and Ellen Bahtiarian.
Many tributes were paid to the Schwartzkopfs, including from Gov. John Carney and Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester; Sen. Chris Coons; and Sussex County Councilman Mark Schaeffer.
Pete likes to give credit where credit is due.
“For the last 35 years, I’ve had Carol by my side pushing me, encouraging me, listening to me complain, and bouncing ideas off of her,” he said. “I may be the one out front with the public, but she’s the reason I’m able to do that.”
