Pine Hollow Christmas Tree Farm back in Sposato hands

Open for season Thanksgiving Day
November 15, 2019

After a one-year hiatus, Fred and Shelly Sposato are once again operating Pine Hollow Christmas Tree Farm.

“We are back in our business that has been a family holiday tradition for three generations in Southern Delaware,” Shelly said. “We welcome back all of our faithful customers as well as new folks anxious to start their own family tradition.”

Shelly said Fred began planting Christmas trees at his Hudson Road location in 1984. After a seven- to eight-year growing period, public sales began in 1991.

Fred experimented growing different varieties before settling on Douglas and Canaan firs, Shelly said. They later began importing Fraser firs after a flood on the farm wiped out more than 3,500 Douglas firs.

“Fraser firs, prized for their excellent needle retention and fragrance, have been so popular that he has continued his partnership with Smoky Holler Tree Farm in North Carolina to this day,” Shelly said.

The farm offers thousands of live and cut trees ranging from three to 14 feet, and prices will be lower this year, Shelly said. Staff will measure, cut, bale and load trees; the shop offers farm-fresh wreaths, swags, grave blankets and holiday decor.

For every tree purchased, an ornament can be placed on the Living Giving Tree, and Pine Hollow will donate $2 to Shriners Hospital for Children, a longtime beneficiary of Pine Hollow Tree Farm.

Shelly noted that Pine Hollow is not affiliated with pop-up business Coastal Christmas Trees, which she said is selling trees at Winter WonderFest and had been advertising under the Pine Hollow Christmas Tree Farm name.

“After enjoying Winter WonderFest and Schellville with your kids and grandkids, continue that Christmas spirit and come on down around the corner from Hudson Fields to Sposato’s tree farm to hunt for that perfect tree,” Shelly said.

Pine Hollow Christmas Tree Farm opens for the season Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28,  from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday. Find Sposato’s Christmas Tree Farm on Facebook, or call 302-841-5373 or 302-245-6660.
