Pleased end-of-life option bill is now law

June 3, 2025

We are pleased that our Delaware legislators passed House Bill 140 and Gov. Meyer signed the bill into law May 20. This legislation gives end-of-life options to Delaware residents who are terminally ill, providing the right to choose a death with some peaceful comfort and dignity. End of life is a very personal journey. Now, patients with terminal illnesses can end their suffering if they have a prognosis of six months of life or less deemed to be true by medical professionals. Consideration of this legislation took many years, and much effort was given to ensure safeguards were incorporated into the bill. About 70% of Delaware residents support the right to choose a death with dignity and less suffering, according to a survey by the nonpartisan organization, Compassion and Choices.

It took over a decade for this legislation to be successful with the introduction and steadfast shepherding of the bill by former Rep. Paul Baumbach. We are most grateful for the dedicated leadership Paul Baumbach gave to our state. We also thank Rep. Eric Morrison and Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend for getting this legislation over the finish line.
