Police: Intoxicated man bites one, resists arrest

A Middletown man faces charges after Dewey Beach police say he bit a local business employee June 18 and then fought with police who tried to arrest him.
 
Dewey Beach police responded to Route 1 and Bellevue Street at 12:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a disorderly man and learned that Matthew Burton, 24, was intoxicated and bit a staff member of a local establishment, police said.
 
While trying to place Burton in custody, police said he threatened officers and resisted arrest. A Dewey Beach police officer was injured while falling to the ground, and he was transported by the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department to Beebe Healthcare where he was treated for multiple fractured bones in his hand. The staff member that was bitten by Burton was treated at the scene and released.
 
Burton was charged with feloly second-degree assault, resisting arrest with force, public intoxication, and other charges.
 
Burton was transported to the Dewey Beach Police Department where he was arraigned (by video) at the Justice of the Peace Court 3 in Georgetown. Burton was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $13,150 secured bond.
