Pres Lee asks for your vote in BPW election

April 28, 2023

As you know, the Board of Public Works will be holding an election of board members Saturday, May 13. My present term on the BPW expires this year and I am running for re-election. I am asking for your support.

I’ve enjoyed my time on the board and hope to be able to continue my work. There will be three of us running for two seats. The other two candidates – Wendell Alfred and Barbara Curtis – are well-qualified friends of mine, so I have stiff competition. I have a proven track record on the BPW, and an extensive background specifically related to the design and management of utilities.

I’ve decided not to use yard signs during the campaign. I intend to do direct email communication and this letter to the Gazette to make my case for re-election.

My experience and qualifications include:

  • 20-year resident of the City of Lewes and lifelong Delawarean
  • Bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware in 1969
  • Registration as professional engineer in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey
  • 40-plus-year consulting engineer career, with much of that devoted to municipalities and utilities such as the Lewes BPW
  • Partner in Tatman & Lee Associates Inc., consulting engineers, requiring technical, business and accounting skills
  • Past president and national director of the American Council of Engineering Companies, Delaware Chapter
  • Lifelong member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Nominated by ASCE for the 2009 Delaware Engineer of the Year
  • Nominated by the Chesapeake Chapter of the Water Environment Federation for WEF’s National Collection System Award in 1999
  • Designed major water and wastewater facilities throughout Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania, including Sussex County’s Wolfe Neck Wastewater Treatment Plant, New Castle County’s Odessa WWTP and Middletown’s WWTP
  • First elected to the BPW in 2011 and served as secretary, vice president and president.

Service to other organizations includes:

  • Trustee and property committee chair of the Children’s Beach House the past 13 years
  • Previous trustee of the Lewes Historical Society
  • Previous board of directors member of the Overfalls Foundation
  • Previous commissioner on the Lewes Parks & Recreation Commission
  • Project manager for the construction of Canalfront Park.

My lifelong experiences as a native Delawarean have given me the opportunity to work and associate with key individuals at federal, state, county and city levels, as well as civic and business leaders throughout the state and region. These associations have been very helpful in addressing issues that have come before the BPW over the last 12 years.

You don’t have to be a citizen of Lewes. Everyone inside and outside the city who receives services from the BPW can vote. They can register in person at the BPW or online. See details of the election on BPW’s website.

I hope everyone qualified will take the time to register and vote.

D. Preston Lee, P.E.
Lewes
