Prickly Pear Trail hike is March 6

March 4, 2010

The staff at Delaware Seashore State Park is offering a guided hike of the Prickly Pear Trail, which is located within the Fresh Pond Tract.

This piece of state park land, located just east of Ocean View, is composed of over 700 acres of upland forest, meadows and marshes.

Delaware Seashore State Park acquired this land in the 1990s, which brought the last piece of undeveloped land in eastern Sussex County under state open-space protection.

The Prickly Pear Trail is over 3 miles long and is mostly flat, dry land.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore both upland forest and meadow habitats, looking for signs left by the resident deer, fox, owls and other creatures that call this area home.

The hike will take place at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 6, and preregistration is required. For more information, or to preregister, call 302-227-6991.
