Prioritizing men’s mental health saves lives

July 1, 2025

As June comes to an end, so does Men’s Mental Health Month, but the importance of the message must last year-round. Too often, men are taught to ignore pain, push through challenges in silence and carry the weight of their struggles alone. The consequences of this culture are devastating: While men make up just half of the U.S. population, they account for the majority of suicides.

Behavioral health is just as important as physical health. Taking care of your mental well-being isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an act of strength. Getting help is the first step toward feeling better and reclaiming joy, no matter what life has thrown your way.

Seeking behavioral healthcare doesn’t have to be daunting. It can be easy, affordable and discreet. Just like you would go to the gym to build physical strength, checking in with a mental health provider is a way to build emotional resilience, improve relationships and enhance overall well-being. Because you are more than just the sum of your parts. You are a whole person, and your health matters.

La Red Health Center is here to help. Our compassionate behavioral health providers are available in Milford, Georgetown and Seaford to support men on their journey to wellness.

This June, and every month, let’s challenge the stigma. Let’s encourage the men in our lives, and ourselves, to speak up, seek help and live healthier, fuller lives.

John Russum, LCSW, is the behavioral health administrator at La Red Health Center.
