Produce and garden stand to open at Black Hog Farm May 25

May 22, 2018

Black Hog Farmstead at 16371 New Road in Lewes will open a porch farm stand from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 25, to continue all season.

The first five customers get a free $5 produce certificate for current or future use. A red and yellow banner on New Road marks the driveway. Parking is available next to the porch, so visitors should come up the driveway.

Featured for May 25 are asparagus, arugula, microgreens, radishes, spinach, tender spring lettuce and vegetable transplants. Peonies are available as cut flowers. Garlic scapes should be available for all garlic fiends. Green onions are also coming along, as well as a nice crop of leeks and shallots due later in the year. Some deciduous shrubs and perennials also available.

Produce for the season includes excellent, long-keeping, triple-washed greens such as arugula, lettuces, spinach, Swiss chard and kale; asparagus; leeks; onions; peppers; tomatoes; potatoes; blueberries; blackberries; and other offerings. In August and September, Black Hog Farm owners Helen S. Waite and John Feliciani, with Dr. Ray “Garlic” Glick, will also be attending the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, showcasing garlic and figs.

Black Hog Farmstead is known to many for its six-year participation in the Historic Lewes Farmers Market on Saturdays. A local, sustainable, best organic practices small-farm, it also supports education and outreach through hosting the Lewes Beekeeping Club’s Apiary (hives), offering once-monthly farm-to-table dinners (May through October), and managing a small bed and breakfast within the farmhouse.

For those interested in looking around the farm further, brochures are available to facilitate self-guided tours of the more than four-acre farm. Ducks and geese in enclosed pens help keep the farm weeded and bug-reduced.
