Propane charges need to be regulated

February 23, 2024

The following letter was sent to Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf and Sen. Russ Huxtable with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.

I just received my propane bill and was shocked to see that they had raised the per-gallon charge by $0.35 ($2.8899 to $3.2399). For me, this increased my bill by $43!

I am an elderly retiree on a fixed income, as are many of my neighbors, and it seems unconscionable to me to do this in the winter.

Our neighborhood of 369 homes is on a community tank, so we are unable to individually negotiate with other suppliers.

As you know, propane is the byproduct of refinement of both natural gas and oil. As long as we continue to use these fossil fuels, propane will be available. It seems counterintuitive that the charges for those sources are regulated but propane is not.

I respectfully request that the Legislature look into the possibility of regulating propane charges.
