Public hearings on Dewey parking requirements set Dec. 18

Changes under consideration for restaurants with less than 4,000 square feet of patron space

The Dewey Beach Planning and Zoning Commission will hold two public hearings on parking requirements Dec. 18 after town council voted unanimously in November to refer issues to planners.

The first hearing regards the consistency of residential parking requirements within town documents.

The other hearing involves a possible change in some zoning districts to negate off-street parking requirements for restaurants with less than 4,000 square feet of patron use. Larger restaurants would need one parking space for each 200 square feet of patron use over 4,000 square feet rounded up, including open decking.

The matter arose during discussions among planning and zoning commissioners and town council regarding parking requirements for the proposed Starboard Claw restaurant. According to town code, Starboard Claw must provide 19 off-street parking spaces based on its patron area square footage. 

Starboard Claw representatives have requested an exception from required off-street parking spaces; a board of adjustment hearing to decide the matter is set for Jan. 11.

The planning and zoning commission public hearing is set for 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave. A link to the online meeting is available at townofdeweybeach.com.
