The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, and the Lewes Public Library invite film and literary enthusiasts to a screening of "The Selfish Giant" at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Based on the 1888 children’s fable of the same name by Oscar Wilde, "The Selfish Giant" is a British drama set against the backdrop of post-industrial northern England.
An official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, "The Selfish Giant" is a gripping story about 13-year-old best friends Arbor and Swifty. During a forced absence from school, the boys begin working for a dubious scrap dealer selling discarded wire to scrap yards. Their hard work pays off in the beginning but as Arbor becomes increasingly greedy, tensions build, leading to a tragic event that transforms them all.
This screening is part of the monthly Read a Movie series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well or not so well the story was expanded to the big screen. Screening attendees can receive 15 percent off Dos Locos’ regular-priced dinner entrees the evening of the screening.
The Read a Movie series takes place the second Wednesday of each month, September to May. To sign up to receive Read a Movie stories in advance, email Denise Hoban at outreach@rehobothfilm.com. Admission is $3 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $5 for nonmembers.
Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, go to www.rehobothfilm.com or call 302-645-9095.
