Reading ASSIST Institute to hold conference Nov. 17
Marilyn Monahan, executive director of the Reading ASSIST Institute in Wilmington and Milford, recently announced that its Instructional Division will present its first Creating Opportunities for Reading Excellence Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Sheraton Hotel in Dover. RAI expects 250 area educators to attend.
The focus of the conference will be teaching reading to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards for grades pre-K through 8. These standard educational outcomes have been adopted by 46 states and three territories and will form the future of teaching of reading in public schools in Delaware.
Dr. Louisa Moats, author of "Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling" and a contributing writer of the Common Core State Standards, will be the morning keynote speaker; the afternoon keynote speaker is Dr. Anita Archer, national expert on instructional procedures and literacy instruction. Ten additional literacy experts will present on a variety of topics including early literacy instruction, differentiating instruction and tools for teaching reading to English language learners.
