Register by May 1 for chili, barbecue contest

April 19, 2011

The Indian River School District’s Adult Education Division will host its inaugural School Yard Chili and Barbecue Competition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 21, on the grounds of Georgetown Middle School-Georgetown Elementary School. Admission is $3 per person.

Teams wishing to enter the competition must preregister by Sunday, May 1. The entry fee is $20 for chili and $50 for barbecued ribs and chicken. Teams may enter both competitions. Each team will be given plenty of space to cook and must provide its own meat, cooking ingredients, utensils, fire extinguisher, prep table and optional shade tent. Only wood or charcoal may be used for cooking.

Entries will be judged on appearance, taste and tenderness. First-place awards will be given in each category and a trophy will be awarded to the grand champion.

The event will also feature a variety of arts and crafts vendors. The entry fee for vendors is $10.

To register for the competition or for rules and more information, contact Rhonda Schiffer in the Adult Education Division at 302-436-1010. Competition rules are also printed in the Winter 2011 Adult Education course catalog.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the event will be held rain or shine.
