The Cultured Pearl is set for a new look after the Rehoboth Beach commissioners unanimously approved a permit of compliance.
The bar and the sushi bar will swap places and a stage and dance floor will be added.
Owner Susan Wood said the change would improve customer service. Wood said she tries to make changes to the layout of the restaurant every five years to keep things fresh.
She said the stage would enable the Pearl to host more musicians, something the restaurant started last summer and will be continuing this year. Last summer, when the Pearl hosted guitar players, the musicians would play by the upstairs pond or stroll around the restaurant.
“People just love it,” Wood said. “I think this would make it a little more official.”
Under the current layout, the kitchen and the bar are on one level, while the sushi bar and most of the seats are on a raised level. Wood said by switching the bar and the sushi bar, the sushi bar and the kitchen will be in the same area, making service more efficient.
Wood said she hopes to do more with desserts in the new layout, which will provide an area for people to have coffee and dessert while listening to music.
Wood said it was a mistake to put the bar on the downstairs level and the sushi bar on the upstairs level when the Pearl moved to 301 Rehoboth Ave. five years ago. The Cultured Pearl has been in business for 20 years.
She said the plan is to move the sushi bar and bar before Memorial Day.
