Rehoboth-area senior center offers new programs, special events

Cape Henlopen Senior Center is now offering a new weekly program, Reduce Stress With Gentle Movements & Awareness, at 1 p.m., Thursdays. Through a variety of activities including gentle movement and breath work, participants will acquire techniques to calm the nervous system and help regulate emotions, learn to be present in the moment, and strengthen the mind-body connection for overall best health. The instructor is Alison Rosen.

Physical therapists from Pivot will offer a Fall Prevention and Balance Screening Program at 9 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, at the center. Benefits include identifying movement deficits related to increased risk of injury, and free balance screenings and fall risk assessments. No doctor referral is required; further assessments will be recommended if appropriate. Space is limited, so participants must register in advance by calling the center at 302-227-2055.

CHSC will host Spring Into Fitness from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, April 28, with a lunch break from 11:35 to 12:30. A light lunch will be served. This all-day event will feature 20-minute demonstrations on a variety of exercise and dance classes taught weekly at the center, such as Arthritis Exercise, Cardio Drumming, LaBlast Fitness, Sit and Get Fit, line dancing, different yoga and tai chi options, fitness circuit training and more. The annual CHSC Wellness Information Health Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, May 11. It is free and open to the public. Beebe Healthcare will provide free testing from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, body mass index and glucose. No appointment is necessary. Hear USA will offer hearing screenings from 9 am to 12 p.m., and appointments are recommended; call 302-227-2055 to sign up.

Guest speakers will address various topics during the fair, and advance registration is recommended due to limited seating. Times and topics are:  9:30-9:55 a.m., Mary Anne Bonafair – Senior Medicare Patrol; 10-10:30 a.m., Tom Trobiano – Cardiovascular & Neuroscience; 10:35-11:05 a.m., Savannah Bauman – The Domestic Violence Advocacy Program; 11:10-11:40 a.m., Steuart Martens – Healthy Home Environment. After the lunch break, programs will resume as follows: 1-1:30 p.m., Ed Weirauch – Good News About Cancer; 1:35-2:05 p.m., Amira Glover – Medicare 101 ... The Do’s and Don’ts.
