Rehoboth Beach Museum walking tours kick off May 12
For anyone interested in women’s history, Rehoboth Beach has plenty to offer, and Jean Brolund’s Spunky Women Walking Tours offer a chance to learn about local ladies of the past and enjoy some time in the fresh seaside air.
The first Spunky Women of Rehoboth Tour will begin at 9 a.m., Monday, May 12, at the Village Improvement Association parking lot on Grenoble Place across from the Henlopen Hotel and Condominiums. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.
After visiting the VIA Clubhouse, the group will stroll through town learning about the women of Rehoboth Beach who made it a more pleasant place to live and vacation. Topics will cover town history and improvements ranging from beautification to comfort stations, including the Rehoboth Art League founding, the Rehoboth Public Library’s beginnings, the Mosquito Matrons, the Children’s Fishing Pier, and Irénée du Pont’s plans for Lake Gerar.
Guides will include stories and photos about healthcare, real estate, businesswomen and entrepreneurs, suffragettes, restaurateurs, philanthropists and more. The tour will conclude at the Anna Hazzard House on Christian Street. Spunky Women tours will continue one Monday per month: June 23, July 14, Aug. 4, Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.
The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and the iconic buildings that line the town’s streets deserve their own tour, and the Rehoboth Beach Museum again calls on Jean Brolund to fill the bill.
Her Walking Tours of Rehoboth take place every other Thursday, starting May 15. Guides lead attendees on a gentle, 90-minute stroll around town, highlighting its history and pointing out important landmarks while showing pictures from different time periods.
Topics include native peoples, the Methodist Camp Meetings, fires, World War II, shipwrecks, storms and more. Parking passes for the tour will be provided when meters are operating. Attendees should bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour groups will meet at 9 a.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.
Admission for the walking tours is $10. The Rehoboth Beach Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Ave., and admission is by donation. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Members enjoy special benefits. Learn more at rehobothbeachmuseum.org.
