Rehoboth Elementary art students explore the Sunshine State

Work focusing on animals, architecture and artists graces school walls
June 12, 2022

Capping a yearlong study focusing on the animals, architecture and art of Florida, Rehoboth Elementary art students displayed their work in a variety of media throughout the school halls.

Art teacher Kelly Ranieri said students were excited to create animal glow art projects, which, she said, is a new trend in elementary art, along with paint pours. Ranieri belongs to a social media group comprising elementary teachers worldwide who connect and share ideas about art trends.

A study of Florida would be incomplete without exploring the art of Disney. Students learned about Disney animator Mary Blair, a studio artist behind many classic characters, and emulated her style in creating animals and people based on the “It’s A Small World” ride.

Students also learned about contemporary painter Iris Scott and created their own interpretations of Disney dogs in Scott’s style, and also made miniature birthday cakes to celebrate Disney World’s 50th anniversary.

In addition to creating self-portraits of themselves as tourists in Florida, students studied Miami pop art; created dolphins, flamingos, turtles; and drew homes in the Florida Spanish architectural style.
