Rehoboth Elementary hosts annual Arbor Day celebration

May 14, 2025

Rehoboth Elementary School students, staff and members of the greater community gathered April 17 for the annual City of Rehoboth Beach Arbor Day celebration, dedicated to honoring the importance of trees and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Doris Person, RES principal, opened the celebration by emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. She said, “This event has become a long-standing tradition with Rehoboth Elementary and the City of Rehoboth. It’s an opportunity for our students to learn that their small actions can make a big difference, not just for their community but for the entire planet.”

The celebration featured an Arbor Day Proclamation read by Rehoboth Beach Mayor Stan Mills, a recognition of the annual poster contest winners by the Rehoboth Art League, a ceremonial tree planting, and a variety of nature-inspired activities designed to educate and inspire young minds.

Ashley Melvin, a Delaware Forest Service education specialist, was also in attendance to share her knowledge and answer students’ questions about trees and conservation.

Near the outdoor classroom, students from each grade level planted tree saplings as symbols of growth, renewal and the school’s commitment to sustainability.

“Arbor Day is the perfect opportunity to come together as a community and plant the seeds of environmental responsibility,” said Tina Windsor, fifth-grade teacher and Rehoboth Elementary Arbor Day coordinator. “We are grateful to the City of Rehoboth for their continued support in helping to make this day special for all of our students and the entire community.”
