Republicans should adapt to Delaware’s values

November 3, 2023

Rep. Bryan Shupe's commentary regarding how the 2024 legislative elections could create a political ruling class in Delaware falls far short of providing readers with a valuable tool for combating his concern.

Each party selects and supports candidates whose ideas are in line with their stated values. One party may run a candidate who has viable, sensible, affordable and reasonable ideas, while the other runs candidates who seek to undermine, weaken or destroy our institutions, whose ideas are out of touch with what many consider normal. It is the voters who then decide who should represent them.

Based on the current situation in our state, it would seem to me that Mr. Shupe should not simply complain about the Democrats winning supermajorities, but work with his fellow Republicans to develop candidates with viable, sensible, reasonable and affordable ideas who can challenge the Democrats on those principles. Until that happens, the voters will have little choice but to vote for their self-interests, not against them.
