This summer, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation will offer two sunset cruises for the public; cost is $35 per person. The monies raised by ticket sales will support the ongoing restoration of the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.
Tours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, June 5, and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11. Participants are required to be at the dock for check-in a half-hour before departure time. Cruises leave from Anglers Fishing Center, 213 Anglers Road, Lewes, where there is plenty of free parking. Passengers are invited to bring their own beverages and snacks for the outing.
Cruises travel up the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, through Roosevelt Inlet and into Delaware Bay to view both the Delaware Breakwater East End Light and the Harbor of Refuge Light, which mark the entrance to Delaware Bay and the National Harbor of Refuge. Photo opportunities include not only the lighthouses at sunset, but often pods of dolphins and other sea creatures.
Also this year, the foundation will offer on-site tours of the Harbor of Refuge Light at 9 and 10:15 a.m., Saturday, July 24; 8:30 and 9:45 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 21; and 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25. These outings include a visit to and tour of the working space of the Harbor of Refuge Light, plus a close-up water view of the Breakwater East End Light and plenty of photo ops at both lighthouses. Tours are $80 per person. Active foundation members receive a $10 discount. Minimum age to participate is 12 years old.
