Robert ‘Wes’ Jones, retired police officer
Robert Wesley "Wes" Jones, 64, of Georgetown, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. Wes was born in Milford, Feb. 23, 1948, son of the late Robert Carey Jones and Elsie Marie Andrie Jones.
He was a 1966 graduate of Milton High School, a graduate of the United Wesleyan College of Allentown, Pa. and had completed several additional courses in criminal justice at Del Tech in Georgetown. Following high school, Wes served in the U.S. Marine Corp; he served 14 months in Vietnam with the artillery division (Kilo 4-12). After his return he began his career as a policeman, beginning with Milton, then the Millsboro Police Department and subsequent to graduation in November,1976 from the Delaware State Police Academy, he retired at the rank of sergeant from the Georgetown Police Department in 2004. After his retirement he worked for Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium until his recent illness, in the capacity of buildings, grounds and crematorium assistant.
For over 20 years Wes and his wife have been involved as Civil War reenactors and living historians, where he served most recently as a brigadier general of the 1st Artillery Battalion with the Provisional Army of the Confederate States and as commander of the Unit-2nd Company, Richmond Howitzers. In 2011 he was awarded by Gen. Brian Gesuero, the Order of St. Barbara Medal from the United States Field Artillery Association in recognition of his lifetime service in artillery excellence. Wes considered the entire organization his extended family.
His local involvements included being a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans; member of Odd Fellows Lodge 17 and Hope Rebecca Lodge 24 both in Milton; Sussex County Return Day Committee director; member of the Order of the Redmen in Lewes; and a life member of the Georgetown Historical Society where he had served two terms as president and was currently serving as vice president.
Wes is survived by his wife of 40 years, Debra "Debbie" Reynolds Jones; his son Jerry Allen Jones and wife Rachel of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers: John C. Jones and wife BJ of Ellendale, and Walter Jones and wife Debbie of Bethany; two sisters: Edna Jones and husband Ralph of Hubert, N.C. and Ann Mucha and husband John of Lincoln.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Crossroad Community Church, 20684 State Forest Road, Georgetown, where a viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. A viewing will also be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, at the church.
