Roots Salon expanding in Lewes

New stylists now accepting clients
July 28, 2018

Not even two years after opening, Roots Salon in Lewes is branching out.

New stylists Lisa Dickinson and Paige Reed recently joined the salon, opened in October 2016 by Melissa Baxter and Jess Huss, bringing with them nearly 40 years of combined experience and new services.

Both stylists love the cozy, comfortable setting at Roots.

“It’s very chill and intimate,” Reed said. “I love the atmosphere and vibe here.”

Cutting hair runs in Dickinson’s family; her mother attended beauty school and taught a young Dickinson the ropes.

“I was doing ‘kitchen cuts’ in high school for whoever would let me do their hair,” she said.

Originally from the Baltimore area, Dickinson trained at Avara’s Academy of Hair Design, then known primarily as a barber school.

“I chose barbering school over beauty school because you didn’t work on mannequins. You had actual people in your chair - men from the neighborhood,” she said. “Instructors would cut half their hair, and we’d do the other half. They told us not to worry about their cuts, saying their hair would always grow back. I learned all free-hand, precision cutting.”

After graduation, Dickinson worked in an upscale Baltimore barber shop for 15 years until her parents retired to Lewes about 2006.

“I had small kids, and when they moved, I lost my childcare,” she said. “So I opened my own business close to home.”

After visiting her parents, Dickinson fell in love with Lewes and wanted to buy a home. Two years ago, she and husband Craig stayed in town for a week, all the time needed for him to fall, too. They bought a home in January and will move permanently in time for son Jack to begin his senior year at Cape High; daughter Lily studies communications in Spain.

Dickinson’s job at Roots resulted from good timing.

“I stopped in last spring, but they didn’t need another stylist then,” she said. “I stopped by again in April, and they were growing enough to need another stylist.”

Dickinson specializes in short, precision cuts for men and women, as well as foil highlights, all-over color and soft beach-waves perms. Find her at Roots every Thursday and most Fridays; she still works part-time in her Baltimore salon.

Reed, a 2012 Cape High grad, attended Denver’s Aveda Institute and is a certified cosmetologist and hair extension stylist. She specializes in services for blondes, performing the bayalage hair coloring method, and is at Roots on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

“It’s sun-kissed hair. You paint the hair so that the bleach never gets to the root,” she said. “You paint in a pattern so about three-fourths of the hair is colored and looks more natural as it grows. It’s an investment, but only needs to be done every couple months instead of weeks.”

Both stylists say the best way to book appointments is by text. For an appointment with Dickinson, text (443) 904-5484; with Reed, text (302) 430-1597. Reed’s styles are also on Instagram at hairgoalsbypaige.

Roots Salon is at 361 Savannah Road, next to Lewes Fire Department.
