Thank you so much for your informative article in the Feb. 10 edition of the Cape Gazette, "Malfunction Junction work to begin in March." Along with the photos, it provided a most useful and clear summary of the upcoming work. I took particular note of the following paragraph: "DelDOT officials were asked why the Route 9 intersection is not being converted to a roundabout. ‘The volumes are just too high,’ said ... [the] deputy director and chief engineer."
I was heartened to see a recognition on the part of DelDOT that roundabouts are not always the answer to all traffic issues. I hope that DelDOT does not come to regret its decision to place five roundabouts on a one-and-a-quarter-mile section of Kings Highway. On that section of Kings Highway, DelDOT (about a year ago in another Cape Gazette article) was quoted as justifying roundabouts by describing the traffic volume on that section of Kings Highway as "light to moderate."
Although at certain times of the day/year, I would dispute the accuracy of that description even now, it certainly will not be an accurate description in five to 10 years. I expect that by then we will all be saying that the volumes are just too high for Kings Highway also.
