I applaud the editorial board of the Cape Gazette for raising concerns about roadway safety in our area, especially on Route 1, which is turning into – or is now – the wild west from Milford to Lewes. There is no speed limit to speak of. With the onset of summer traffic, the roadways are only getting worse. If you are driving anything close to the speed limit, you are being run off the road. Out-of-staters come down thinking that they own the roads. They have no regard for the speed limit or safety.
There is no law enforcement or police presence on Route 1. I am mindful that Delaware, just like every state in the union, has a shortage of law enforcement. I get all that, but something needs to be done to curb the speeding on this roadway, especially during the summer months. Post speed limit signs, flashing lights, more patrols on Route 1 ... anything.
I am hoping that someone in your paper has some sort of connection/input to the Department of Transportation and state police to address these issues, which certainly they are aware of.
I moved to Milton five years ago, and getting onto Route 1 from Cave Neck Road gets more dangerous by the day. On the afternoon of June 1, I was unable to get onto Route 1 due to an accident at Cave Neck Road. On the morning of June 2, Route 1 was backed up from Cave Neck Road to the Nassau Bridge due to another accident. It’s an everyday occurrence, mostly the result of excessive speed.
To sit back and do nothing is not the solution. We don't have the luxury of waiting three years for some new intersection/overpass to be built, and until then, watch the fatalities increase every week. Do something now!
