Run With Santa ends weeks of holiday races and costumes

Race Into New Year and Hair of the Dog are next on the calendar

The foot traffic holiday running season is heading toward the Race Into the New Year 5K at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 31, in Rehoboth Beach, then the Hair of the Dog 5K on New Year's Day in Bethany Beach.

Runners are done gobbling, trotting and Christmas sweater wearing. Counting the Rehoboth half and full marathons, there have been 14 local races since Thanksgiving Day.

The 20th annual Run with Santa 5K, hosted by Seashore Striders, was held Dec. 20 at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Tim Pagano, 40, of Lewes led a field of 181 runners and was the overall winner in 17:43. Pagano was followed by Matt Sparacino, 43, of Harrington in 18:07 and Deacon Odenwelder, 10, of Lewes in 21:09.

Jamie Hicks, 48, of Milford was the first female in 22:14; next was Flor Duerr, 34, of Dover in 23:42. Teri Welsh, 58, of Lewes was third in 23:44. 

The race also marked the end of the fall season for the Let Me Run groups of middle school students.
