Sadness, bittersweet humor regarding Sussex’s destruction

February 16, 2024

I am always filled with great sadness and bittersweet humor when I read letters to the editor and articles on the continued destruction of Sussex County. The latest is Julian Karpoff filing suit against Atlantic Concrete. I've got news for you, Atlantic Concrete has been at that location since at least 1969. The school bus I rode from Milton to the newly consolidated Cape Henlopen High School traveled through Five Points, and to my recollection, the only other business in the area was Tom Best’s store, which was, at the time, hardware and groceries. So, I have to agree with Tracy Coover’s suggestion that Mr. Karpoff move. I can't see Atlantic Concrete going anywhere. Best's store didn't have such a fortunate outcome.

While on the subject of the changes in Sussex County, I have to disagree with Ron MacArthur’s story on the Route 9 conflagration. That train left the station years ago, and Cave Neck Road is right on schedule to join it.

I drive around Sussex County on a weekly basis, and these developments with all the huge, lookalike houses that people believe they have to have make my heart hurt. If these developers really want to help Sussex County, we need affordable housing for the service people who work here. I’m not talking about rentals, but real, smaller housing with the basics that families need. No HOA, no clubhouse, no pool; just basic, good, affordable housing.
