Santa Sprint 5K at Northbeach draws 146 runners

A total of 146 runners braved torrid conditions July 17 to circle the streets of bayside Dewey Beach for the 20th annual Santa Sprint 5K at Northbeach. 

Matt Wagoner, 44, dominated the field like a Jeep on the beach, winning in 16:24. Matty Muthler, 19, was second in 17:51. 

Lisa Veneziano, 56, of Fenton, Mich., was the overall women’s winner in 18:54, a course record. Lisa, a regular summer visitor and racer now retired from a career as a General Motors executive, is considered one of the top age-group women in the United States over distances of 5K and greater.

Matt Sparacino, 43, aka the Harrington Harrier, won the masters division, placing fourth overall in a time of 19:07.

Majorie Adams, 61, won the women’s masters trophy in 27:22.

There were 13 states represented in the race.

The 12th annual Harry K Foundation 5K will be held Sunday, July 25, at the Greene Turtle in Lewes. The Kiddie K starts at 8 a.m., and the open race starts at 8:15.
