Saxophonist Camille Thurman leads clinic for Cape High musicians

Workshops embody educational mission of the True Blue Jazz Festival
October 17, 2023

While Oct. 13 was a no-school day for students, class was in session in the Cape High band room.

The morning before their evening performances as part of the 11th annual True Blue Jazz Festival, renowned saxophonist Camille Thurman and her husband and drummer Darrell Green led an intimate clinic for pupils.

All music is about drama and contrasts, Thurman told students in the master class workshop.

“I just want you to hit that note and blow me out of this classroom,” Thurman said as she coached students how to swell together, sit properly and breathe. “Now that’s music!”

Education is a major component of the True Blue Jazz Festival, which hosts free clinics for students, offers thousands of dollars in music scholarships and provides young performers with access to some of the field’s greatest musicians. For more information, go to truebluejazz.org.
