SDARJ to present new issue of Black Voices publication Feb. 4

January 28, 2022

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Social Justice will release Black Voices, Vol. 2 to the public Friday, Feb. 4.

Black Voices focuses on relevant issues about racial and social justice from the points of view of community members, the church, young people, legislators, businesses, educators, and allies through stories and articles they write. Its mission is to create deeper understanding, build bridges, and stimulate action and advocacy toward making society more just and equitable.

The focus of this second issue is celebrating Black History Month while advocating for Black history to be integrated into all areas of the school curriculum year-round. Student contributor Hanifah Ouro-Sama writes, “Failing to teach Black history is – at its core – inconsiderate. As many other Black students can attest to, not being represented within a curriculum you are supposed to study is an isolating experience. If your history is disregarded within the classroom, it makes you reconsider whether you, as a student, are truly valued.”

Two stories in this issue center on local Black history, the days when Lewes and Rehoboth had thriving Black communities, along with a story about the beginnings of Black History Month. Another article speaks to the dangers of extremism in society’s midst, and another to injustices in the court systems, continuing the publication’s thread about racial injustice throughout the criminal justice system. Also, readers will learn about upcoming legislation to keep eyes on and speak out about.
