The Cape area has a significant number of residents interested in advancing racial justice. Sometimes this involves confronting hard truths and having difficult, but necessary, conversations.
Recently, I was fortunate to participate in a program designed to facilitate such conversations: A Dialogue Toward Ending Racism. This program, comprising seven sessions, was sponsored by the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. The 12 participants were a diverse group: men and women, Black and white, gay and straight. Expertly co-facilitated by an African American man and a white woman, we had candid, sometimes blunt, conversations about race, stereotypes, how to handle encounters with biased individuals and tangible ways to reduce racism. In a culture where it’s more comfortable sharing the size of one’s retirement nest egg than talking frankly about race, this was a remarkable experience. There are plans to have more sessions in the fall. I encourage all Cape residents of good faith to consider participating in this life-changing, crucial dialogue.

Letters must be the author’s original work, and may not be generated by artificial intelligence tools. Templates, form letters and letters containing language similar to other submissions will not be published.
