Sussex Academy sophomore Reilly Mobilia busts a move. There’s nothing like execution at all three levels to put an end to a losing streak, like the Sussex Academy girls’ lacrosse team did against Indian River April 29.
The 16-7 victory came as a result of spreading the love on offense, while making the adjustments needed to keep IR at bay.
“We kind of went on a little bit of a losing streak, so it feels good to know that our efforts are paying off,” senior Ellie Merrick said.
Sussex Academy scored the first seven goals of the game, taking a 7-0 lead after 12 minutes of play. IR’s defense settled down to keep the Seahawks to just one goal in the second quarter while putting in three goals themselves. However, Sussex Academy’s defense clamped down and executed a stand for the final 1:45 of the first half, taking an 8-3 lead at the break.
“It’s just a lighthearted game, catching up with some of the girls, but I think it is a competitive game, and today kind of showed that,” senior Shea Danahy said. “As the game went on, we got a better grip on our play.”
Goals came much easier for both teams in the second half, but in particular for Sussex Academy. Merrick ended up with a career-high six goals and added an assist.
“It was really exciting being able to do that,” Merrick said.
The senior was delighted to play against one of her friends, Chloe Harris, who netted a hat trick for IR.
Danahy tickled the twine five times and had two assists. Junior Liz Layton had a legendary performance with eight assists and threw in two goals for 10 points in the contest. Junior June Hale, and sophomores Reilly Mobilia and Brooklyn Montgomery each had a goal.
“We moved out and spread the ball quickly, and when we were able to pass and catch really effectively … that's kind of when we were able to get those quick goals off,” Merrick said.
Senior Kacie Rawlings had five saves in the effort, including two right on the doorstep.
