For the first time in three games, the Sussex Academy softball team was held below double-digit runs as reigning Henlopen Conference champion Lake Forest dispatched the Seahawks 12-6 March 31.
The Spartans have been on a tear to start the season and are on a revenge tour after their 17-1 season ended in the DIAA quarterfinals last season. Surprisingly, both teams were held off the board in the first two innings. Lake Forest opened up the scoring in the third and managed to plate a run in every inning the rest of the game.
Sussex Academy scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first run came off a single from Marley Campanese that plated Teagan Forester. Then a double off the bat of Danica Bergh scored Aubrey Campanese, who was pinch running for Marley. But, this was after the Spartans scored three in the top half of the inning, making it 4-2 heading into the fifth inning. Lake Forest tacked on another run in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the Seahawks in a 12-2 hole with just three outs left.
Eighth-grader Bailey LeCates got on base to lead off the final frame, followed by a walk from Bergh. Senior Delainie Monitzer’s double scored LeCates and put Bergh on third. Junior Grayce Glover forced a walk to load the bases for junior Caroline White, who drove in Bergh and Monitzer.
Audrey Snyder rolled into a fielder’s choice, but the action scored Glover. Unfortunately for the Seahawks faithful, Sussex Academy ran out of outs and was tagged with its first loss of the season.
