Seahawks boys’ volleyball splits season series with Delmarva Christian
Following a 3-2 home win over local rival Delmarva Christian May 1, the Sussex Academy boys’ volleyball team is one win away from .500 with an opportunity to pull even on Senior Night.
Delmarva Christian pulled away in the first set for a 25-17 win to open the match, but the Seahawks responded with a 25-13 victory in the second set.
Sussex Academy put the visitors on the brink with a 25-23 third set before the Royals forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
In the final set, both sides made a case to earn the victory, but it was the Seahawks who flew away with a 15-11 win to take the match 3-2, avenging an April 14 3-0 loss to the Royals.
Senior Vito Barone led the team with 33 assists, and his three aces finished second in a three-way tie with fellow senior Owen Schrader and junior Jovan Jean-Louis. Sophomore Ethan Evans paced the Seahawks with nine digs. Junior Desmond Davis’ seven digs were good for second on the team, as were his two assists, but his 13 kills led the team. Junior Mack Lawson finished just behind him with a dozen kills, but he led the team with 11 aces. Schrader’s four blocks were a team high.
Sussex Academy will celebrate its seniors before its next match, set for 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, against Dover.
Delmarva Christian celebrated its seniors after the Cape Gazette deadline May 4 and will end its season with a match set for 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, at Aspira.
