Seems Hypocritical to Me!
Don't you find it a bit ironic that the New York Yankees are retiring Andy Pettitte's number 46 this year? Pettitte has openly admitted that he used performance enhancing drugs in his career. This seems odd that the Yankees are doing this when they are currently treating Alex Rodriguez like a criminal for his steroid use. There needs to be a more clear definition of how an "exceptional" ballplayer garners recognition at the close of their career. The era of steroid use has made for much confusion on who is a hero in any sport. If no one who has used steroids will be allowed in the Hall of Fame, don't the individual teams have to come up with a standard as well for how to retire a number? I am actually looking forward to Alex Rodriguez's retirement in the near future so that we don't have to talk about him as much. I know he's served his one year suspension and can now play, but it still isn't the right message to send to kids trying to make their way in professional sports of any kind.
While we are all freezing our butts off here in Delaware, the Phillies have started their spring training camp in southern Florida. I know it's considered cold down there right now as well, but 50 degrees sounds pretty darn good to me! So there better be no complaining and let's all hope that they can surprise us and get a few good wins to start the season. At this time last year, would anyone have thought the Kansas City Royals would make it to the World Series! So anything can happen folks. Keep that in mind. Now for a bit of a reality check, the biggest key to the start of this season will be the 3 top pitchers and what they bring to the mound. Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, and Aaron Harang have to earn their keep!
In golf news, we already know (but it won't be official until next Tuesday... which is rather hilarious) that Davis Love, III will be the United States captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup. This will be a well-deserved second chance at redemption for him and the team. Love was a very successful captain in 2012 in everything but the final score. His players blew a 10 to 6 lead on the final day. Hopefully 2016 will have a better outcome.
