Sen. Carper visits Atracare

October 14, 2022

Atracare, a full-service medical facility in Lewes, welcomed Sen. Tom Carper Oct. 4, for a tour of its facility and an opportunity to discuss upcoming healthcare initiatives.

Carper requested a visit to Atracare after hearing about the exemplary service and dedication that its staff provided to patients following the COVID pandemic. He was offered insight into how medical practices can not only survive but thrive by responding to patient needs and innovating in healthcare.

“Our staff immediately recognized the need for a different model that incorporates electronic communication and registration to keep patients safe from infectious disease,” said CEO, Dr. William Albanese. “We want to increase access and improve care which is why we’ve incorporated texting and telehealth services into our practice as a staple of care.”

In the pediatric department, discussion shifted toward the growth that Sussex County is seeing in all ages of the population, not just among retirees and seniors. The need for pediatricians has increased dramatically since there are so few currently available.

Atracare opened with one pediatrician, Dr. Maria Childers. Since then, Childers has added three more pediatric providers to meet the needs of her patients. “And we’re looking to add more,” said Childers. “We just need the space to house them, which is why we are working quickly to open Plantations Medical Center.”

Plantations Medical Center is Atracare’s most ambitious project to date. It is a medical campus opening in 2023 and designed to house providers from all medical specialties. With more than 40,000 sq. ft. of medical office space, Pediatrics is looking to expand services at the new location.

After shaking hands and hearing stories of each Atracare employee, Carper and his staff assembled in the lobby to learn about Atracare’s plans to expand in Ocean View. Opening the end of October, Albanese described their newest location. “Our second walk-in clinic will give patients access to everything that our current location does: X-ray services for bumps and bruises, COVID and flu testing for cough and cold, COVID vaccines, and any treatment that patients need,” he said. “Now services are closer to home if you live in the southern part of Sussex.”
