Several concerns with Cape referendum

May 17, 2024

I am writing to express my opposition to the upcoming Cape Henlopen School District referendum. While I understand the importance of investing in education, the proposed tax increase fails to address any educational initiatives or academic deliverables.

Additionally, this is bad timing. Homeowners are facing their first property tax reassessment in 50 years and cannot properly estimate how much the school tax referendum will cost them prior to the vote. Once reassessment values are finalized in November, voters will be in a position to make an informed decision.

Furthermore, the lack of transparency and accountability regarding specifics in terms of how the operating revenue will be allocated is deeply concerning. I urge my fellow citizens to join me in voting no on the referendum to ensure responsible use of taxpayer dollars and safeguard the financial well-being of our community.

Also, no one has committed to not raising the district revenues by up to 10% as allowed by state law when a reassessment takes place, which would be in addition to the proposed referendum.
