Shields fifth-grader wins Americanism essay contest at district and state levels
Christopher Williams, a fifth-grade student at Shields Elementary School, wrote a winning essay in the Elks Americanism contest. This year’s theme was “What Can I Do to Promote Americanism and Love of Country?”
Williams' essay was selected to represent Cape Henlopen Lodge 2540 at the district level and took first place. Williams was honored with a first-place selection at the state level which includes Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia. His essay has been sent to the national level for further competition.
Williams credited his grandmother, Jo Marvel, as his inspiration for his writing. A copy of Williams' award-winning essay follows:
What I Can Do To Promote Americanism and Love of Country
As Americans, it is important to support our country. It's an honor to live in the United States of America where our forefathers fought for our freedom. We can show Americanism in many ways. I have chosen three that are important to me. They include flying our flag, buying American products, and supporting our troops and veterans.
Flying the American flag is one way we can show Americanism. Our flag has been a symbol of freedom since June 14, 1777. Each star represents the 50 states. The 13 stripes represent the British colonies that became the first states of the Union. The colors red, white and blue represent courage, liberty and loyalty.
A second way to show Americanism is buying American products. Buying American made products not only increases the economy, but supports American manufacturers and workers. The future of our Country depends on Americans finding work. American workers are guaranteed a minimum wage for their job. In other countries, workers are taken advantage of. When you buy American made things, your friends and families will have jobs and be fairly paid.
Finally, you can show Americanism by supporting our troops and veterans. You can donate to the Wounded Warrior Project. When you see a soldier you could walk up to them and say "thank you." It is also important to know our history so we can understand the cost of our freedom. These are just a few ways to show support for the men and women who protect us.
In conclusion, we live in a great country that provides us with all of our needs. We can speak freely and vote. We have freedom of choice and freedom of religion. I am proud to live in this great country, the United States of America.
