A recent mishap that occurred on a Sussex County road in the early morning hours required that I call for roadside assistance from my auto insurance company. An innocent mistake on the part of the youthful tow truck driver left my vehicle without the ability to steer. I drove home slowly with the tow truck following me.
With the light of the sun, I inspected the damage, consulted several friends and determined that the car had been towed by the steering arm and not the frame. The damage was unintentional and the result of inexperience. I telephoned Shocker Towing company, the responding tow service, loaded for bear. The call was answered by the same individual who had provided the roadside assistance days earlier.
He recalled the event and asked if he could see the damage. He arrived within the hour, diagnosed the problem and accepted full responsibility for the damage. He promptly ordered the needed part(s) to fix my car, towed my vehicle to a mechanic, promising to have it back to me within 24 hours.
My faith in humanity has been restored. Anthony (the owner/tow truck driver) chose to accept full responsibility and to make it right for me, at no cost. In this day of preoccupation with profits over honesty and responsibility, I can only applaud his business sense and realization that word of mouth can make or break a business' reputation, at least here in Sussex County.
I'm glad the response to my need for assistance was solicited from west of the beach area. I firmly believe that the outcome would have been considerably different and that the tone of this letter would have reflected that.
