Sidelines: One more step!
The American women’s soccer team has advanced to the World Cup final on Sunday to play the Netherlands. It should be a very close game that is expected to come down to the wire.
In the semifinals, the Americans were able to beat a very good England team by the score of 2 to 1. The U.S. did not actually play a very good second half in the game. They won by surviving an attacking England team, who had one goal called back for being offside by a foot or so. And the U.S. goalie saved a penalty kick. So if they want to be champions of the world, they have to play a much more complete game on Sunday. The game starts at 11 a.m. in the morning on Fox TV.
The Phillies are still in second place in their baseball division and are currently playing their rivals, the Braves. The Phillies are very capable of winning the wildcard for the National League. The trade deadline is coming up at the end of July. I think it is ridiculous that the Phillies have not had a left-handed starting pitcher for the last two years. I hope they can find one before the deadline to help out for the rest of the season.
The Wimbledon tennis tournament has begun. There was one big story happening on the women’s side of the draw: 15-year-old American Coco Gauff beat her idol Venus Williams in the first round. To me, it is uncanny how much they actually look alike. I think Coco has a good chance to become a superstar if she remains healthy and motivated since she is so young. Also, Angelique Kerber, defending champion, lost in the second round. There have been no big upsets on the men’s side so far. I am hoping for some new stars on the men's side too.
See you on the sidelines!
