Skim-a-Thon for Childhood Cancer set in Dewey June 18

The second Skim-a-Thon for Childhood Cancer will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 18, at Delaware State Park Tower Road Beach south of Dewey Beach. Participants who would like to learn how to skim will receive two hours of instruction and the use of boards from Tom and Dave Bracht and the RELYance Skim Camp team. Experienced skimboarders can come out and shred some waves to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer.

Prizes for the participants who raise the most money include a new Exile skimboard valued at $300, an Ashton surfboard donated by Atlantic Shoals Surf Shop valued at $600 and more. Lunch will be provided by Bethany Blues, and games will take place between the two instruction sessions. The price to register is $15 as an experienced skimboarder or $25 for the instruction session. The proceeds from the event will go to the Get Well Gabby Foundation.

The Get Well Gabby Foundation was started in memory of Gabriella Vogel, who was a valiant fighter of childhood cancer, but passed away at the age of 5. Since its inception, Gabby’s family and the foundation have donated $98,000 to the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children Oncology Unit. They have also collected and donated $51,000 worth of new books to nine children’s hospitals through the annual book drive.

The foundation provides an opportunity to assist kids and their families and help them get well, and has donated over $13,600 to local families. Gabby’s family resides in the Bethany Beach area. For more information, go to www.getwellgabby.org.
