Smyrna quarterback Cameron Edge went 13-of-15 for 266 yards in the first half, then led the Eagles to a 42-0 victory to avenge the 2020 DIAA 38-34 semifinal loss to the Golden Knights.
It was the second straight shutout by the Eagles. They defeated Caesar Rodney 40-0 last week.
Smyrna moves to 3-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-2.
Smyrna struck on the first series. After a 15-yard penalty, Edge threw a 67-yard touchdown to junior wide receiver Denim Smith.
Smyrna’s Wayne Knight scored the next two touchdowns on runs of two and three yards. Devin Demoe added the two-point conversion. Yamir Knight scored on a nine-yard toss from Edge. Wayne Knight ran the conversion. Knight added his third touchdown on a 13-yard run and scored the conversion to make the score 36-0, and the Eagles finished the shutout with Tim Yancy pounding in from one yard out.
“Smyrna is deserving of their No. 2 ranking for sure,” said Central head coach John Wells. “We didn’t execute on either side of the ball, but a lot of that was due to their efforts. They are an excellent team.”
The Golden Knights will welcome Milford Friday, Oct. 8, for the Central homecoming. The Eagles will travel to St. Georges Saturday, Oct. 9.
