Delaware area social media marketing professionals and business owners gathered Oct. 30 at Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown for a day of learning, networking and collaboration at its 11th annual Social Media Conference, which featured an impressive lineup of local speakers and presentations.
The event offered both in-person and virtual attendance, connecting participants with some of the region’s leading social media marketing experts. This year’s central message focused on authenticity, staying true to oneself in a world clouded by digital clutter and information overload.
Keynote speakers were introduced by Jillian Whitney, Delaware Tech director of workforce development and community education, and Courtney Thomas, conference moderator. The morning keynote speaker, Kerriann Otaño, shared an inspiring story of her journey from singing opera in the bathroom to performing professionally at The Met, and transitioning into marketing for OperaDelaware. She encouraged attendees to embrace what she calls “joyful advocacy,” showing up with authenticity, leading with kindness and letting passion shine through. Otaño emphasized that shame or self-consciousness should not stop anyone from sharing their creativity and voice online.
Later in the day, Alexis Grainger (previously Alexis Harris), founder of Simpli Solutions LLC and First State Destinations, echoed that message of authenticity through her own experience. She noted the irony of being an introvert working in social media, a field that demands constant visibility and communication, yet she has found purpose in helping others build their brand strategies and social media management plans.
Throughout the conference, breakout session speakers offered practical insights into emerging tools, creative strategies and data-driven techniques designed to strengthen online engagement and boost return on investment. From small businesses and nonprofits to larger organizations, attendees walked away with actionable skills and fresh perspectives to elevate their social media presence, and do so with authenticity and purpose.
