The 2019 season has begun for Southern Delaware Roller Derby, and the team is looking for sponsors to help with operation costs and for traveling to regional bouts.
Formed in 2011, the Dover-based team is coed, with an all-female team that has competed nationally in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association since 2016. Last year, in just nine months, the team jumped in rankings, from 307 to 247.
“We have been working hard proving that even though we are from the little state of Delaware, we have big goals and are making every step count as we reach for them,” said Cat Perfetti, team president and skater since 2014.
Mark Powell, team treasurer and skater since 2018, said traveling, participating in tournaments and hosting bouts is expensive, which is why the team is reaching out to its local community for support. Donations go toward travel and hotel arrangements for approximately 50 people – skaters, coaches and referees, tournament fees, required EMT personnel and more.
“We anticipate that it will cost our league about $10,000 to cover the costs for the season,” said Powell. “We are looking to our friends, family and community to help us raise funds.”
Perfetti said SoDel, which has team members from Kent and Sussex counties, has a heavy presence on all social media platforms, and donations will be given exposure to the team’s fans on Facebook, which number more than 3,000.
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated, said Perfetti. Gift cards or in-kind service donations that can be raffled off to assist the league also work, she said.
Donations can be mailed to Southern Delaware Roller Derby, 18588 Cool Springs Road, Milton, DE 19968. Southern Delaware Roller Derby is a nonprofit organization and if requested will provide a letter of donation for tax purposes.
