Sports at the Beach is growing again.
The sports complex along Route 9 east of Georgetown is not only adding an indoor sports facility but also providing new outdoor sports courts.
Pete Townsend, president of Sports at the Beach, said the new facilities are an outreach to involve people interested in sports other than baseball, which has been the mainstay of the facility's 13-year history. More than 40 tournaments are scheduled this year from April through November.
Opening by Memorial Day will be the new 8,400-square-foot Indoor Sports Academy and 13,000 square feet of outdoor courts for basketball as well as pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports crazes in Sussex County.
Scott Townsend, general manager of the facility, said the heated indoor facility is designed for a variety of sports including baseball, basketball, soccer and pickleball. The floor plan can be changed to accommodate a variety of sports, he said.
He said baseball teams can take advantage of indoor batting cages and trainers during the week to supplement weekend tournaments. The cages can be retracted and the facility can be set up for other sports. He said pickleball leagues are excited to start playing at the facility.
Besides time for open play, Townsend said they would like to offer tournaments in the future.
Sports at the Beach opened in 2003 and has grown to include 16 fields for players of all ages.
The complex also features All Hallows Farm, concessions, pool memberships and swim lessons, fishing, four dormitories for up to 24 teams, 30 outdoor batting cages, party pavilions, a dog park, two playgrounds, a walking course, a bounce house and a remodeled and expanded pro shop.
With tournaments on weekends, Sports at the Beach offers sports camps during the week.
“We want to do a little more than just baseball,” Pete Townsend said, adding the sports complex is open to any ideas for indoor sports.
