Stifling free speech is a threat

March 26, 2024

As a journalist for most of my life, I could not help but respond to a letter in the March 25 edition criticizing Delaware Colonial Region Republicans for inviting Derrick Evans to speak at a fundraiser. The letter writer said he should not be allowed to talk because he was convicted for taking part in the Jan. 6 infiltration of the U.S. Capitol. I believe this growing trend to stifle free speech is the real threat to democracy. I don’t think shutting out opinions you may oppose is healthy for a vibrant society. Let’s welcome all points of view, debate them, say why you disagree, but hear them out.

As Martin Luther King Jr. reportedly said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
