Substance use disorder toolkit launched for healthcare workers
The Sussex County Health Coalition recently announced its collaboration with Caron Treatment Centers to develop and introduce Pathways to Empowerment: Substance Use Disorder Foundations – A Healthcare Worker's Toolkit for SUD.
The groundbreaking resource, developed with funding from state opioid abatement dollars, is designed to equip healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and skills to effectively address the substance use disorder crisis.
The Pathways to Empowerment training offers a robust curriculum focused on enhancing the competency of healthcare workers in various critical areas of substance use disorder care.
Recognizing the widespread impact of SUD and the vital role healthcare professionals play, this program will provide a foundational understanding rooted in evidence-based practices.
Key curriculum objectives covered include: a better understanding of addiction; properly assessing clients; understanding treatment modalities; ensuring professionals understand the meaning of culturally informed care; awareness of co-occurring and trauma-informed care; knowledge of how SUD affects the family; ethical and legal considerations in this work; and taking care of oneself and preventing burnout.
"For nearly 70 years, Caron Treatment Centers has been a leader in the field of behavioral health treatment. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in strengthening our healthcare workforce's capacity to respond to substance use disorders," said Peggy Geisler, SCHC executive director. "This comprehensive resource will empower professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide compassionate, effective and culturally sensitive care, ultimately leading to better outcomes for individuals and families in Sussex County and beyond."
