Surfgimp Foundation representatives recently volunteered at the 2021 U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing Championships at Oceanside Pier in Oceanside, Calif. The event, held Sept. 9-12, featured a $20,000 prize purse and the opportunity for athletes to be crowned U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing champion.

Melanie Liesener, foundation member, said it was a weekend spent supporting and cheering elite athletes as they continued to elevate the sport. Foundation members had the pleasure of watching several foundation grant recipients chase titles in their divisions, giving everything they had in the water, she said.

“So much stoke! It was amazing to reconnect with the athletes after an extended break due to the pandemic, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event,” said Liesener.

Ronnie Phillips, foundation member, said it was another successful trip for the east coast water safety crew from Team Surfgimp. It’s an honor to support these incredibly talented athletes, he said.

Established in 2017 in memory of Milton resident and Surfgimp Jay Liesener, the foundation’s mission is to support individuals with disabilities who require assistance to participate in desired physical activities.
