April 16, 2025

Sussex Academy inducted eight founding members of the newly formed Computer Science Honor Society during a ceremony held March 27.

Students Lucas Ducote, Alec Dukes, Josue Laurore, Eva Navitskaya, Wyatt Stout, Grace Thomas, Jack Thomas and Yareli Velasquez were sworn in as members of the first-year chapter.

A program of the Computer Science Teachers Association, the society has more than 200 active local chapters.

Tim Elmer, society chapter advisor and STEM and science teacher, said,  “The purpose of this organization is to encourage students’ enthusiasm for computer science, to honor academic excellence and to promote service.”

Elmer said the society empowers members to become ambassadors of the computer science discipline and fosters a commitment to promoting outstanding scholarship in computer science coursework.

To be eligible for membership, students must have attended Sussex Academy for at least one semester, must have completed at least one semester of an AP computer science course with a minimum grade of 80, must have at least an 80 average in all AP computer science classes, and must not have received any disciplinary consequences in the past school year.

Computer Science Honor Society members are required to submit evidence of school or community service each year and to attend society meetings during the school year.
