Sussex Academy soccer downs Milford

April 27, 2023

The Sussex Academy girls’ soccer team fell behind Milford 1-0, but the Seahawks turned the tables and scored four straight goals to garner a 4-1 victory April 25.

Milford’s Lila Mergner scored at the seven-minute mark off a pass from Rylee Metzner.

The Seahawks got three goals from Catherine Brown, including a penalty kick for Sussex Academy’s first goal. Tayler Flaherty added the fourth goal at the 78-minute mark.

Assists were credited to Carmen Merrick, Flaherty and Natalie Roblero.

The Seahawks held a 20-10 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corners.

Sussex Academy junior Grace Fiorilla made 10 saves in goal. Milford keeper Isabella Hanna had 16 stops.

“It was a slow start for our group,” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “Milford came in ready to go, focused. We were sluggish and Milford came out firing. Down 1-0, you get to witness what we’re made of and the kind of character we possess. Our girls stayed the course, picked it up and came back quickly. Experience throughout the pitch allows for us to close out matches the way we do. It was a great result against a good Henlopen North team.”
