Program’s first win over Caesar Rodney
May 3, 2023

The Sussex Academy girls’ soccer squad scored a 3-2 win over Caesar Rodney May 2 to move to 9-2 on the season. The Riders fall to 4-4-2.

The Seahawks outshot CR 19-6 and held a 3-1 corner advantage.

Catherine Brown put the Seahawks on the board first with an unassisted blast at the 17-minute mark. Debra Williams tallied the second score off a pass from Tayler Flaherty.

CR answered with a goal from Elizabeth Serrano, assisted by Kate Benson at 35 minutes.

The first half ended with the Seahawks ahead 2-1.

Brown started off the second half just like the first, scoring unassisted at the 43-minute mark. Riders senior Allyson Durham answered six minutes later off a helper from Hannah Glanden to close the gap to 3-2.

Seahawks keeper Grace Fiorilla made four saves, while Riders goalie Kylee Elliott made 16 stops.

“It’s a great result for our group,” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “It’s the first time in school history beating CR, and our girls knew that too. They set goals at the beginning of the year, and this was one of them. We came out strong, controlled much of the match and buried chances we created. That’s a sign of a good team. Certain players are really maturing into their roles, and we are getting the most out of them. Now is that critical time in the season where you need your players to settle in, make connections, play collectively, and these girls really are. Their recent results prove that. CR is a historically great program, and to come in and take care of business, and continue to push the agenda even after conceding is a big deal.”

The Seahawks will face off against 7-3-1 Indian River in a big Henlopen South match Thursday, May 4.
